Lunch Pals

We have a program at our school called Lunch Pals. Volunteers sign up to have lunch with a student from the 3rd grade and that student is usually a child that needs special attention, for one reason or another.

My lunch pal is a little girl named Brittany who is as cute as a bug, likes pink and her favorite subject is Science. The two times I've seen her, she was wearing pink and today was our first lunch together for this semester. We meet the child in their classroom and go to the cafeteria with them while they eat - we can buy lunch there if we want. We talk back and forth with each other but not supposed to ask anything about their personal lives.

I asked the teacher in charge of this if we could go outside and eat lunch next time I go (Brittany asked me if I could come on Mondays). My ears are still ringing from all the noise in the cafeteria - all Elementary kids - but it was something I'm very glad I signed up for - very fulfilling.

Brittany must live in a house without too much love because she wants to hug anyone she can find all the time. She went to one boy twice and hugged him and I told her that "little girls shouldn't be doing that". Our Lowe's Distribution Center has the most people signed up to be lunch pals. Lowe's is very active within our community in all ways and gives their employees time to do some of the volunteer work here in town.

I also signed up to help 1st graders with their reading which I've done before and that is a real "hoot". The teacher decides who needs help and those are the ones the volunteers give one-on-one help. Last time I did this, I had about 10 kids and each class is supposed to be under 20 kids in all rooms and usually are between 15 & 18.
