September Project

Over the last couple of months we have been gradually upgrading and reorganizing our home office areas in the house. Some of this was initiated by the need to replace our aging computers and a desire to get more use out of our loft area that we use as a library. We wanted to get most of the major work done by the time my work schedule changed on September 20.

Over the summer we worked on the library by adding a work table, comfy chairs, a couple of lamps and finished the last wall with bookcases. We were finally able to organize all the home movies that were still in boxes and now we have one place for all the DVD's.

For September our focus was on the office. We wanted to decrease clutter and increase storage. After shopping and looking at many office layouts we finally decided that Cheryl would make our desks to fit exactly what we wanted. She picked out a great piece of wood for the desk tops and mixed a stain that exactly matched her maple bookcases. She also found some small bookcases and under desk drawer units that would work great for the desk legs.

We set Cheryl's birthday as the weekend for the big furniture switch in the office. That weekend we shut down the computers, disconnected everything and hauled the big desk and the glass table out. We moved the maple bookcases from the living room to the office and put the desks together. The next weekend we picked up the custom cut glass for the desk tops and finished reinstalling the computers.

We are very happy with the way the office turned out. It is more functional for both of us to work in and that makes everything easier. This was one of the largest projects that we've tackled inside the house. The curtains still have to be hung, but we already have the fabric for that.
