From Tourists to Workers

What a busy time the four of us have had over the last two days. Taking absolute full advantage of my two days off, Cheryl, Artie, Heidi and I did it all. We were tourists on Wednesday, riding the light rail into town and showing Artie Seattle. On Thursday, we all were workers as we dug into the Rhodie garden and moved plants.

Our trip to Seattle started near the Seatac airport as we boarded the new light rail line. We had all been interested in trying out the new line since it opened just weeks ago. The stations are large, spacious, and easy to access. The train cars themselves were very nice and designed for heavy commuter use. Already about 12,000 people a week are using the first Seattle line.

We rode all the way into the tunnel underneath downtown Seattle where we could go directly into the Nordstrom store. From there we went to the surface, stopped at Starbucks and headed for The Pike Place Market. It was about noon, so there were plenty of people on the downtown streets.

The Market was full as we wandered from shop to shop. One of the mineral and stone shops had some great figurines. Cheryl bought a Malachite elephant there. It has interesting green stripes. While at the Market we stopped at the Pike Brewery for lunch. We got the six beer sampler and decided we like the Kilt Lifter the best.

After lunch we walked down to the waterfront to see the piers. We saw the Argosy Cruise office and Cheryl walked in and got us tickets for the one hour Harbor cruise. It was really nice to get out on the water and see the city from a different angle.

Back on shore, Cheryl took us through a series of buildings that allowed us to go up hill using the elevators and escalators. Cheryl pointed out special buildings where she worked and then we went back down into the transit tunnel. There we picked up our train back to Tukwila. On the way home, this tired group stopped at the grocery store for dinner fixin's - fresh deli Rueben sandwiches.

Thursday presented us with a nice, cool, overcast day. Great for doing yard work. Cheryl and I had changed our minds about a walkway along the rose garden and we needed an area of grass removed from the Rhodie garden in front. So, we decided to move the grass from the front to the back. Cheryl and I had been thinking this would be a big summer project. With Artie and Heidi's help we completed the work in one day.

Artie and I cleared out the grass in the front and Cheryl and Heidi transplanted it in the walkway area in the back. Artie and I moved the red Rhodie out from the fence. Cheryl and I ran out and picked up a half dozen bags of top soil and two big bags of bark to dress the garden with. When we got back it took all of us to transplant the Hydrangea from the south garden to in front of the porch.

Now we are tired and ready for supper. Hope you enjoy the pictures!
