Ben's Heart Surgery

Ben had a cardiac catheterization done this morning at Children's Hospital in Denver. He is 8 1/2 months now and right at 20 pounds. They were able to close the Payton Ducts off solid. This is a vessel between the heart and lungs that is supposed to close itself at birth - his didn't close. This helped decrease the extra blood flow that they measured going the wrong way to get to the lungs.

They got a good look at the little hole, it very small, but were unable to fix it - as it was to close to the valve. This is by far, the least of the Doctor's concerns. They could fix it, if they would do open heart surgery.

They were unable at this time, due to his size and the size of the vessels that they had to go thru, to fix the large hole. They said in time he would grow enough to fix it with another catheter job. Mugsy and Dan will meet with the Cardiologist and his big boss this Monday to make plans on how and when they will finish the job. They could elect to do open heart surgery soon, or wait for some months for another catheter job.

He can go home tomorrow and will do just fine with one of his issues now fixed and one yet to get done. The Doctor's did say he would have no lung problem residuals from his current problems. This is and will be the case no matter what path they take care of the large hole. This by far was the best news of the whole event.
