A Flooded Christmas

December 25, 2009
By Susie Devries

While many people are having a white Christmas, we have a wet Christmas. We have gotten 75.54 inches of rain for the year of 2009 so far. That has crushed the old record set in 1882! I've enclosed some pictures we took yesterday of the flood waters at Little Rock Air Force Base. The small [military] base lake was nearly over the road that leads to the back gate. The pictures show the small base lake, with the road leading to the back gate in the middle and then the big base lake.

There are some pictures of the 'snowbirds' who come to the base and camp in their giant campers. The bridge that normally is over a trickle of water is nearly underwater!! The 5th wheel is most likely had a wet floor!! I also took some pictures of the road that lead to our old house. There is a car in the water, almost completely submerged. When we got there, rescuers were wading waist deep water, pulling a boat to get the people out. Again, the stream that provided that water is usually just inches deep. The next pictures are of the swamp in Gravel Ridge. It's always swampy, but yesterday it looked more like an ocean!! I-30 was closed in both directions for 10 hours yesterday because of flooding. We have never seen that. It's been amazing to say the least.

It's been a wet year to say the least. We have never seen so much flooding in this area. Of course that makes sense, this has been the wettest year on record for the last 127 years. I wonder what sort of winter Mother Nature has in for us? Ice? Probably.

Added Pictures
My apologies, I meant to send these pictures with the other flood pictures. This is the church parking lot, the car and the road that had easily 3-5 ft of water on it!!! The water was so deep that I am sure the car could not have driven that far in the water. I think what happened is they drove into the water, not realizing how deep it was and then before they knew it, the car was floating away. That had to be a scary feeling!!
