Polar Science

We just got back from another great time at the Pacific Science Center. The special this weekend was Polar Science. They had special speakers, scientists and representatives from Nasa, the University of Washington, NOAA, and the Zoo. It was a beautiful spring day with the daffadills in bloom.

We heard about the programs a couple of weeks ago and put it on our to do calendar. And glad we did. We got there in time to catch the first demonstration of the day, "Supercold". While the demo was geared for kids, there was a good bit of jee whiz and wow included to entertain. There were several of these 20 minute demos throughout the day.

There was a large exhibit room filled with demonstarions of different aspects of science regarding both the North and South poles. Scientists were on hand to show work they had done at the poles and how they did it. UW students who had gone to the poles as part of student research were also there to share their experience. It was a lot of fun to talk to them.

We took some extra time to stop by our favorite exhibit, the naked mole rats. These entertaining animals are always fun to watch as they scurry from pod to pod through the clear plastic tubes. One of them even appeared to be pregnant. The Center started out in 1992 with 7 of them and now has quite a few.

We ended our time there with the Planetarium program that showed the night sky from the polar view. The speaker was engaging and put the star generator through its paces. She also gave a quick education on how to use star maps and how to identify major constellations.

Of course we did stop for fudge in the Seattle Center building. They were having an Accordian Day program there (polka anyone?). John forgot to bring the camera, so we had to use our cell phones for pictures. A real fun day!
