Accident, Sunset, & Cats

I was in a car accident in my government van. I was T-boned at an intersection in lovely Burbank, Washington. I had just finished a high school visit and I was heading to another high school for a visit. I was waiting on Humorist Road for the left green arrow to turn green, so I could proceed west bound on to State Route 12. The light had turned green and all of the cross traffic had stopped. So I proceeded to start making my turn, when a 1994 Lexus traveling in the right hand lane heading east on State Route 12, roughly doing about 60 MPH, plowed into my driver's side door.

I guess that being deployed has taught me not to close my eyes when the IEDs were going off blowing shrapnel and parts of the road into our vehicles.

Well back to the story, I literally watched this impact of the van, the curtain side air bags came shooting out inflating, the shattered glass flying across the inside of the van, and the van being pushed sideways. The side visors came down and I couldn't see where I was going, and then it dawned on me that there was on coming traffic too. I guessed at applying my brake and just lucked out at stopping at the center of the median.

The driver of the Lexus came over frantically trying to see if I was alive, but all I could hear was his wife screaming at the top of her lungs. I couldn't get out of my driver's side door, so I took off my seat belt and got out of the passenger side door. Needless to say the rest of my day was ruined.

I still do not know what happened to his wife but she was stable. Now, I have to do lots of paper work on the accident, and it has to get investigated by both the government and the insurance company of the other driver.

I'm sure that there will be lots to follow, but on a good note we took great pictures of the kids and the lovely sunset. Enjoy!!!!

P.S. I escaped with only two bruises, one on my left arm and one on my left thigh.
