Garden Time

A couple weeks ago I was able to get my garden all tilled up and ready to go. Then the other day I staked out all the early stuff rows. Yesterday Candy headed Westbound and I headed to the garden just before 10am.

I planted 2 row each of: spinich, beets and yellow/white/red onions. Then I got in 3 rows of Kennebuch spuds. After a late lunch, I went back up and got in 3 rows of Yukon gold spuds. I ran out of bone meal for the spuds hills and had enough for the day. All rows are 20 ft long.

This morning I made an early trip to town with 4 stops, including more bone meal. It was suppose to rain all night and today till late afternoon, but all the rain stayed South of us along the Kansas/Nebraska boarder. So got home and got 3 more rows of Yukon golds in the morning by 10:30am. Then took my tiller at 4" deep and went up and down between all the big stuff row to losen up all the packing I did while planting. I keep all the big stuff 36" apart, so the tiller can fit between the plants. The spinich, beets and onions are 12" apart rows, but 36" apart from different kind of stuff.

So now all my early stuff is in. By noon it was raining and we got a short 1/4" of easy rain - just right for all those seeds and onion sets to get a drink. It will be another 30 days before I plant the later stuff, corn first. Safe frost date around here is May 8. Allowing for the corn rows first and then all my early stuff, I used up 1/2 of my 200ft long garden area.

We start digging Yukons on July 4. They are about the size of tennis balls and very yummy. We will keep digging those as needed until they run out about mid Oct. The other early stuff - beets and spinich will be ready in 35-45 days from now. The Kennebucks will be dug all at once at the end of Oct. and we will keep them cool and dark. They will last us till mid Feb.

Yea for spring!
