Cascade Mountains Drive

WOW, what a great day. We took a wonderful ride through the Cascade Mountains to see the snow. We had never been in the mountains while snow was on the ground. What a sight!

On our way north to Stevens Pass, we stopped in Monroe and went to Starbucks and Cheryl bought a hot chocolate for both of us. You need that to look at snow! As we approached the mountain range, the jagged, rocky peaks looked awesome. The higher we drove, the deeper the snow. When we were driving through Stevens Pass, there seemed to be a tunnel but it was snow stacked up probably to over 20 ft. - from the snowplows. They did have many feet of snow up there so in order for anyone just to get through the pass, the plows had to keep working.

We came down from there and turned east to Leavenworth. I really liked that town. We got out and walked a bit and found a shop that makes their own hand made chocolates. Cheryl bought a small package of different flavors which the three of us cleaned up in nothing flat. None of us had ever had candy that was this good - bar none. Cheryl and John both took pictures of me in front of the Hotel Edelweiss and also in front of the chocolate shop. The sun was partly out and it was cool but not cold. I did put my coat on though when we got out of the car.

We took US 97 south to Ellensburg. We stopped at Dairy Queen and had lunch. We turned west headed back to Seattle - just a big square. Coming through Snoqualmie Pass, the snow was packed up alongside the road the same way as Stevens and LOTS of snow everywhere. The lake up there was covered with snow, except for a section in the middle. It rained on the western side of the pass all the way to Issaquah but after that and all the way back to Kent, no more rain.

Neither Cheryl or John had ever seen the snow through either pass so they were just as amazed as me. LOTS of skiers at both passes.
