Amaryllis

February 11, 2007

I bought an Amaryllis bulb in early November and planted it thinking maybe it would bloom by Christmas. The box said blooms would appear in 7-10 weeks. Mine took just a little longer. I had it in a South facing window, but I guess the 40 degree inside temperature we had for five days during the power outage slowed its growth cycle.

The main stem was only a couple of inches tall at Christmas. It grew about 18 inches during the first three weeks of January. The flower part finally started opening around the 23rd. The blooming process was fast (see pictures below of the next nine days). It developed four flowers that became very heavy. The main stem would bend toward the light during the day and one day when I came home the pot had fallen over, breaking the connecting stems of two of the flowers.

I have now cut the main stem back and we'll see what the leaves do over the Summer. Will try again next Fall and get a heavier pot.
