Renton City Concert Band 12/11/11
By John Schmit
What a fun time we had with Mom at the 2011 Holiday Concert on Sunday at the Ikea Performing Arts Center in Renton. The Concert Band performed several classical pieces and got everyone in a light, positive mood. During the intermission the Flute Quartet entertained with Christmas music. After the intermission, the band continues with Christmas favorites and even invited the audience to sing along. It was quite a festive program.

Mt. Rainier 12/02/11
By Barbara Lawrence
While Linda and I were out yesterday we could see Mt. Rainier and it was so awesome. Every time we saw it we exclaimed over how gorgeous it looked in all its glory. We were down in Federal Way so Linda pulled into a parking lot and I shot this picture. The reason I wanted to get Mt. Rainier is because of the dark ominous clouds above it while below was clear blue sky.

Speech Class 11/01/11
By Rick Schmit
I am so glad to have this speech class finished. By far, it has required more hours of work to complete the class assignments, than in the first two classes. When all you need to do is write a paper, you are finished when the paper is done. As you know, that isn't the way it works for speech class.

Tree & Workers 10/27/11
By Barbara Lawrence
I'm sending three pictures. One is of a tree at the end of our sidewalk, where we catch the Shuttle Shopper, that has turned gold. The other two shows how the men are removing the stucco. This stucco appears to have been put on in sections so one man makes saw cuts in it and now other men are removing those sections. It looked like I could see nails on the underside of the stucco section I saw so I'm not sure what they did originally. It takes two men to pull off each section of stucco and when they pulled it off, they could barely lift it. The sections looked to be about 2 ft X 3 ft., or less. I can tell you one thing - it sounds as if these men are completely removing the side of the building, it's that noisy. Darlene came down to my apartment on our way to walk, and I had to keep saying "what?" when she talked. NO TV until these men quit for the day.

Volcano News 10/25/11
By Bill & Susie Devries
Bill is in Guatemala. Someone drove a loader into a 767 and punched a 6-8" hole in the side of the plane. Broke a couple ribs and such also. Extensive repair, much more than just sheet metal. Bill left on Saturday Oct 22.

Building 10/18/11
By Barbara Lawrence
The men started taking down some trees and putting up the scaffolding today so I took my camera out a little after 3 (after exercises) to take these two pictures. Two of the guys here who have been talking to the workmen, said that they think I will have mold behind the stucco because my living room window has been repaired so many times.

Seahawks Sunday 10/04/11
By Heidi Cardona
Artie and I went up to Renton on Saturday so that we would spend the night and be up early enough to go the Seahawks game. We visited with Mom for a long time to the point where we were still up when Dad got home. We got up about 8 a.m. and had some breakfast that Mom made. We headed out by 10 a.m. to see if we get there early enough we can get some autographs. We did get there early enough to watch them practice but no autographs. We went to the pro shop and bought some more souvenirs and food before heading to our seats. It was a great game, lots of hootin' and hollerin' even all the way down the last 18 seconds. But unfortunately we lost by only 2 points. So it wasn’t a butt whoopin! The score was Atlanta Falcons 30 to Seattle Seahawks 28. Go Seahawks!

Rocky Mountain Express 10/03/11
By John Schmit
We had another good time at the Pacific Science Center tonight. Picked up Nana and went down to see an Imax World Premier showing of Rocky Mountain Express. It's a story about the transcontinental railroad in Canada. Retracing the original route aboard the majestic steam engine 2816, we felt like we were on the train in the age of steam engines. The film put together spectacular IMAX aerial images, breathtaking vistas of the west, and gave the energy and rhythms of a live steam locomotive. The movie was filled with the stunning natural beauty of deep river canyons and high mountain passes. A must see for train fans! While at PSC waiting for the show to start, we played on some furniture there. On the way home we passed the home of the Seahawks and the Seattle train yards. Just a great night!

Trees on South Side 09/25/11
By Barbara Lawrence
I woke up at 4:20 with the blinds both doing a dance way out and back because the wind was blowing so hard. I partially went back to sleep until 7:30 and finally got up. Sometime during the morning, the wind realllyy started blowing again. It was still 79 in here when I got up so with the wind blowing through here, it's now down to 75 - thank goodness. I decided to go for a walk but had to turn around and come home because the wind was blowing so hard against me - along with a few rain drops (with blowing junk in my eyes) that I decided it wasn't worth it. I took my camera with me to take a picture of the trees along this south wall before they are cut down. Of course in this picture it looks as if the red tree covers my apartment, but actually it covers less than 1/3 of my living room window.

RapidRide Bus Testing 09/23/11
By John Schmit
Thursday and Friday King County Metro pulled me off of my regular bus routes to drive the RapidRide bus on a simulated running day. There are no schedules for this route. The attempt is made to keep the busses 10 minutres apart. Thursday was not the best, but Friday was real good. A computer display shows the driver how close his bus is to the one in front of him. This service will begin October 1st and I will be driving one of the busses.

Frank Visits 09/20/11
By Cheryl & John Schmit, Barbara Lawrence and Frank B.
What a great time we had with Frank as he stayed a couple of days with us. He arrived on Sunday and right away we had to show him some of the special sights in Seattle. A little rain made for just the right atmosphere. We started with Kerry Park, then went to Fremont and saw the Troll. We drove through the University of Washington then headed east to Somerset for dramatic views of Seattle and Lake Washington. Frank spent some quality time with Barbara as she writes "Frank and I were sitting on a bench at Saltwater State Park and I saw a small butterfly land right beside me on a yellow flower - looked like a dandelion. I told Frank so he quietly got around the bench and was able to take this picture before it flew away. We sat and watched it a little while before he took the picture. Frank also got a good picture of a plane going in for a landing because the clouds were so pretty." Can't wait for the next visit, Frank!

Starting School 09/14/11
By Lisa Barton
Things have been busy as always here. The kids started back at school. Drew is now in High School! I can't believe it, and Chance is in seventh grade now. They both started new schools this year, a little nevous at first but they have both settled in just great! They are doing so well! Alexxis starts preschool next week. She is super excited! I will for sure be taking pictures for everyone to see :) Daddy is taking her to get a hair trim and she just can't wait! It will be all day at the elementary school, so it doesn't cost anything. She is going to eat it up. I can't wait. She wants a lunch pail and back pack and all the goodies that go with school...we'll see what we can do of coarse.

A Berry Good Day 09/05/11
By John Schmit
What a fun day we had yesterday. A quick shopping trip in the morning, then play time in the afternoon. Nana joined us as we took in some sunshine at Redondo Beach. We watched the boats and fishermen as the crowds walked by. Lots of people there. We then drove along the Green River and found several places to pick wild blackberries. Picking was good and we ended up with about two quarts of berries. Once at home we fired up the Bar-b and chopped some wood for the firepit. Allen joined us for a relaxing time around the fire. The blackberry cobbler was delicious.

Hunter's Star 09/05/11
By Susie Devries
This is a quilt block I made, it's called Hunter's Star. I hope to eventually make a bunch of them and then put them together into a good size quilt. I enjoy this quilting stuff so much. Three of the gals in my quilt group took a class for the Hunter's Star last October. I wanted to, but the class was full. Then I found a quilt book at Joann's that featured the star on the front so I got the book. I still could not figure it out. Then----one of my friends told me about Deb Tucker. She has a video on her web site that shows how to use a special ruler and oh man, it's so easy!! I made this green one as I call it and am working on a purple one. Bill suggested switching the light and dark colors that attach to the triangle so it would be light dark light dark. The star in the center would remain the same. When I do that, I'll take a picture and you can look at it and give me your opinion.
UPDATED 9/5/11 - Here are 3 more pics of my Hunter's Star [added to the picture page]. Two different green ones and two different purple ones. I think they turned out pretty. Click here to see the pictures.

Our New Addition - Chewie 09/04/11
By Heidi Cardona
This is our new addition "Chewie". We picked him up yesterday evening. He's about 2 years old and already 61 lbs. The doc that we bumped into at Petsmart said he needs to lose some weight but overall he looks really healthy. He does have red eyes which is hereditary, he's already going blind in one eye, so we are making him an appointment later on this month to have him checked out and see if there are antibiotics that he needs to be on. Welcome to the family Chewie!

All in all, 9 of us showed up to 'cheer her on'. Her cheer team is Jacksonville Wild Hogs, so is the football team and they won the game 38-ZIP!!!!! She has a game every Saturday through October 22. Practice is twice a week.

The Great Steam Train Ride 09/03/11
By Barbara Lawrence and Cheryl & John Schmit
What a wonderful day to go ride a train pulled by a steam engine. Traveling through the green forest, we rode on the Mount Rainier Scenic Railroad and felt suspended in time. We really enjoyed ourselves as it was a lovely day - not hot and certainly not cool. There were mountain streams, prairies, flowers and a grand view of Mount Rainier as we traveled through the valley on a historic steam train ride. We departed from Elbe, Washington and made the trip out to pristine Mineral Lake for a short visit and took the train back. At Mineral Lake we found gentle trails to explore. In too short of time, we were back at Elbe.

New House 08/26/11
By Barbara Lawrence
Daryl started building his own house the first part of May 2011 next to where the trailer is now located. As soon as they finish the new house to where it is livable (hopefully the end of Sept.), they will move out of the trailer into the house. He already has a buyer for the trailer so one of these days, when he can, he will build their garage where the trailer was. He has done almost every bit of the work himself but decided to have the roofing, drywall and the brick done by professionals.
Daryl said the brick layers left this afternoon and said they would be back next week to finish the window sills as they didn't have enough brick to finish.
I am attaching three pictures taken as Daryl started, during and as of yesterday after the brick layers left.

Trip to Carpinteria 08/14/11
By Frank B.
You may be getting tired of travel stories and pictures but Carol and I, along with a close friend, went to Carpinteria, just below Santa Barbara, last week for a "Desert heat get-a-way" for a few days. Carol and I along with our sons, when they were smaller, often went to Carpinteria State park to go camping. Over the years we began to think of this tiny old fashion town as our dream vacation place for us as it does not seem to have changed much in the last 40 years we have gone there there.

Spontaneous Weekend 08/14/11
By John & Cheryl Schmit
We had a great time this weekend. Our main objective was to deliver a headboard to Artie & Heidi for their new king size bed. Our second objective was to find a dark area to see the Perseid meteor shower Saturday night. We accomplished the first, but the full moon was too bright to let us see any meteors. We also had a great ride home on Sunday.

Our House Part 2 08/13/11

It's wonderful to finally be in a house instead of an apartment! Woo Hoo!! Artie needs more tools now. The joys of being in a new house. All the things that still need done. There's more than we thought. Still, glad to be moved in! No more dealings with apartment problems. Mom & Dad were our first guests. Glad they could make it over so soon. I love my house!!

Little Bit 08/06/11
By Susie Devries
Well folks, I think my 'little bit' granddaughter is just way too grown for her short 5 years. Today we had her baby sister, Nadia, for a short time. Nadia is 20 months. Autumn is carrying her around and says "oh I think I smell a stinky diaper". She lays Nadia down, inspects the 'soiled diaper' and says, 'yep, just as I thought'.

Joplin Update 08/05/11
By Judie Riggen
Hopefully you will be able to see just some of the first pictures of our house and neighborhood. Most of them are on our street, the street at the top of the hill and 26th street, which goes down toward the hospital, just a bit less than a mile from our house. There are some pictures of Dianna's house on here too, if you can pick it out. It's the one with rock and yellow. One pic shows 26th street looking from the east toward the west. Our house was just over the hill. It's hard to imagine it only took a couple of minutes to do all this.

Had an awesome time at Ocean Shores, Washington this last Sunday. Went to the beach to enjoy the surf and get some video footage. There was a low fog that added so much to the pictures. It was fun to take the car off road and onto the beach. Made that all wheel drive work for a change. Nana got plenty of negative ions and we all had a wonderful meal at Red Lobster in Olympia on the way home. Nothing like some really fresh air to let you sleep good, and we did Sunday night!

Autumn, Baby Birds and Corn Dogs 07/12/11
By Susie Devries
Autumn has been having quite a big time at Gramma Susie's house this week. Her Daddy has been teaching her to float in her swimming pool. Then we found some baby Blue Jays. We got kinda close and Mama and Daddy began squawking at us, so we left them alone. Last but not least, we made home made corn dogs. I'd never had them before and they are not too bad. I always thought I didn't like them!! Guess ya don't know till ya try something. Not going to be a regular meal, but a nice treat once in awhile. Autumn helps make the batter, threads the dogs on the stick and plunks them in the batter. Daddy did the frying.

My 20 pound cat, Ralph, resident Lard *** was caught off guard this morning. I'd gone out to get the Saturday paper. He decided to wait for me in his usual spot. He then got up, and it began to move!!! That cat was gone in a flash!!! OMG, I laughed so hard!!! I don't think he will be sitting on Roomba anymore!!!! ROFLOL!!!!

Birthday Dream Come True 05/31/11
By Frank B.
As many of the family knows I love the outdoors and camping. I have camped out for most of my life but never had actually gone Back Packing. Most of my back country experience over these years was using a Jeep, a Quad or my old Tote Goat motorcycle to haul everything. I had a chance to go with my neighbor who is an Australian Journalist and diplomat to a restricted island about 50 miles off the coast of California. It was a dream come true as I had always wanted to go backpacking for real.

UP 844 Steam Engine 05/28/11

The UP 844 steam engine came through Kearney NE this morning heading East. A light load of 4 work cars + 6 passenger cars. This engine could handle 20 cars at 120 mph in its hay day. Snoqualmie Casino 05/23/11
By John Schmit
Had a great time out at Snoqualmie Casino on Sunday. Went out to look around and found some fantastic views. Inside, the casino is very nice, but a bit on the expensive side. I did pass up the $205 steak. Barb and I did pick up our free drinks and a little cash off the slots. Probably will go back for more gaming. According to Barb "Darlene said that Shag chartered a bus not long after Snoqualmie opened the new casino so all of these 6 buildings could go up there. Darlene said it was a real fun trip and she really liked the casino." So, I guess we'll go back soon!!!

Judie and Family 05/23/11
By Susie Devries
I've just gotten off the phone with Judie. Jim found her cell phone, it was in the basement. Judie is still in shock, but we had a good long conversation and she assured me that no one was hurt. Their house is a shambles, every tree in her back yard is gone, parts of the roof of her house are missing, every window was blown out. Judie said the pressure was just unreal. Their cars are demolished.

I'm Free 05/13/11
By John Schmit
Recently, a passenger on my bus was telling me about her father dying. She said that she needed to prepare for speaking at his funeral. A few days later she read to me several poems that she wrote in honor of her father. These were things she wanted to say at his funeral service. What she wrote was very good, so I asked her if I could have a copy and try to put some music to it. She graciously agreed.

Pool season is getting here rapidly. Today Robert, Holly and Autumn got out the pool, cleaned it up and began to fill it. Autumn of course wanted to get in right now, even though it's only about 75 today. She will get cold, but come in and warm up and all will be well.

We have a nest of Robins again this year. They skipped last year. Mom and Dad are the proud parents of two very hungry little ones. There was a 3rd egg, but unfortunately, it met the driveway, before the baby could grow. Here are a few pictures we have.

Franz Bakery Tour 05/04/11
By Barbara Lawrence
We left the Senior Center this morning at 9:45 to go to the Bakery Tour at Franz Bakery in downtown Seattle. It was different because this location only makes the bread and nothing else. The building and everything else covers more than one whole block. It was certainly like being back at Ralphs. This bakery was built in 1952 and they're still using it except they have a couple of pieces of new machinery.

We did get great storms. no damage though, other than some little branches falling from the trees. Was 90 yesterday, so far today only 57!! Big storms though, tornado sirens screaming all over. Apparently one did touch down by the base though, and that's only about 9 miles away. I love a good thunderstorm!!

Walking 04/18/11
By Barbara Lawrence
Darlene and I walked over to the new restaurant behind Rite Aid as it's only been open a month or so, if that. We had Deep Fried Sweet Potatoes and there wasn't enough grease on them to even show on the paper under them. They were really good and a lot of them. I think the place is just a little expensive but maybe I just haven't "grown with the times".

Recent days of rain had us anxious to get out and see the river. We went today to the Green River Valley and looked at the river over flowing it's banks in places. It crested on Friday at flood height. Today it was down about two feet. We had a nice drive. There were lots of flowering Plum and Pear trees to delight the eye.

Sunday Drive 03/25/11
By John Schmit
Last Sunday was just too nice to stay home. We picked up Mom and headed to Mount Vernon to see what was up. There were several daffodil fields in bloom and we even found some crocus'. The big surprise were the geese. They were fun to watch. There was a good wind blowing and as they took off, they'd be moving forward very slowly. We saw a few other animals too! That's Mt. Baker in the distance, with about 250 inches of snow depth on it at the ski resorts.

Shawn Kemp 03/18/11
By Allen Schmit
Something unusual happened today. One of our Seattle Super Sonic's (retired) Shawn Kemp, came in for an oil change today. He drives a black Cadillac Escalade, that we did an oil change and some other things to. We do get some celebrities of sorts in our shop now and again but to my other assistant manager, Justin (left in the pic), Shawn was a personal favorite and was embarrassed talking to him so I did it for him. Shawn was very friendly and agreed to a personal picture for us.

Quilt Guild 03/07/11
By Susie Devries
Here is a picture of a quilt I made. I took it to Joplin with me so my sister who is a wonderful quilter and could show me how to put the binding on it. She said I had to show her friends at the Guild. I said OK, but had NO idea I'd have to be up front and talking about my quilt! I chose it cause it was pretty. It was a Block of the Month from Joann's. The center block and the basket blocks are applique and I had no clue how to do that, so I just did the best I could. Used stitch witchery to secure the pieces and then zig zag around the edges.

Copper 03/05/11
By Susie Devries
Here are some pictures of Copper. Copper is a Ball Python, currently about 20" long and will eventually grow to about 48". Copper will live 20-30 years in captivity. Copper was one of Autumn's birthday presents. She simply loves that little guy. He/she, (we don't know yet) is very docile and easy to hold. Autumn is quick to tell you, do not put him on your neck or by your face, he can constrict and that would not be good!! That little girl doesn't seem to be afraid of anything!!!

Potato Frenzy and Grapefruit 02/15/11
By Frank & Carol
Carol and I were out in the back yard working yesterday and found two "Volunteer" potato plants growing amongst her flowers maybe 20 feet or so away from my Veg. garden. The cool weather had killed the potato plants so we were digging them up as they did not belong there anyway.

Winter Storm 2011 02/10/11
By Susie Devries
They told us and told us, it was comin. It finally got here and for Little Rock or even Arkansas it was a doozy. Gentry AR, upper northwest got 26". We got a total of about 8" here. I checked once yesterday with the yardstick on the front deck and it was an easy 5" then and still snowing. I have some just as it began pictures and then some I took this morning. The snow is light and fluffy, swept right off the deck. My oriental neighbor is out with a home made sled for his daughter. Got a couple pics of that too. It's very pretty but the roads sure are slick!!

Benjamin's 2nd Birthday 02/05/11
By Cliff Chamberlin
Ben turned 2 last week, 1-28-2011. Here are a few pictures from his party from last Sunday. All had a great time.
He had a Dr. appointment this last Wed. and passed with flying colors. He is up to the 45th percentile for height and weight, a far cry better than a year ago. The Dr. said he is a fine young boy and he will grow to be big and strong. He is off the follow up list. That was all we needed to hear!

See's Candy Ribbon Cutting 01/28/11
By Barbara Lawrence
Yesterday Darlene and I left here in the morning to go to a See's Candies Ribbon Cutting for their grand opening in the Southcenter Mall. We were the first ones there but when it came time to take a picture of the ribbon cutting, I had people push in front of me so I couldn't get that picture. Everyone stood in line to take a chance on "the wheel" and I won a 1/2 lb. box of candy. Poor Darlene won a history book of See's - as if either one of us could care less. They had these two race cars there and then the one car was their 1930 Ford which I exclaimed over being it was my birth year. When I was in high school, one of my friends had a '29 Ford Roadster and I got to ride in the "rumble seat" a lot so this was nostalgic for me.

Fanciful Felines Quilt 01/25/11
By Susie Devries
This is my current quilt project. It's a small lap size, but very bright and pretty. My wonderful sister, Judie, got me hooked on making quilts. I've got a long way to go, but it's fun to learn. I made each of my 5 grandkids quilts for Christmas, and I also have 3 others that are almost completed. This is the most fun I've had since I learned how to do counted cross stitch! I want to make more and more quilts, simply for the enjoyment of making them!!

Des Moines 01/19/11
By Barbara Lawrence
I had Darlene with me for my 1 p.m. hair cut appointment and then we stopped back here at the apartments and picked up Linda. We went to Des Moines pier and we each had one of those cheap long loaves of white bread so we got busy feeding the birds. It wasn't long before all three of us had empty bags. When we left there we stopped at Safeway and got back here by 3:40 p.m. It was only 47 degrees and the sun was FULL out with very few clouds but the little breeze made it feel colder next to the water. As you can see from the pictures, it was a glorious sunny day.

Winter & Autumn 01/16/11
By Susie Devries
Here are some pictures of our snow. It was so pretty falling and we ended up with 5" here. Managed to shut Little Rock down pretty good. City kids missed 2 days of school. Some country kids missed up to 4. It's all gone now. The other pictures are of Autumn in her new fleece kitty gown that I made her. She was so tickled that it's so soft and cozy and it has kitties on it!!! I finished it up last night and she just looked at it and said "Oh Gramma!! I love it!! Thank You so much!!" Sure melted my heart!!

Contest Winner 01/13/11
By Frank & Carol
Carol won a valley wide contest for collecting Aluminum Cans and Glass Bottles for her school where she tutors (Rio Vista). The 2011 city calendar came out for Palm Springs and Carol is the pictured person for October. This picture shows Carol accepting the plaque and check for over $3,900.00 dollars that is going to be used to upgrade the schools technology equipment and buy several new desk top classroom computers.
She was soooooo surprised as no one told her that this was happening. As it turns out, the school principal knew but did not say anything to Carol as he knows that she does everything in the world to shy away from awards or public accolade's.

Snow 01/11/11
By John & Cheryl Schmit
We checked out another winter storm today. It was a sloppy mess as it came ashore and dumped on the Puget Sound. Our temps were near freezing so some snow accumulated. The back side of the storm is warmer and it's now raining. Snow should be gone early Wednesday. This is a nice storm to pass on to those to the east. It should get colder and windier and make a nice blizzard in the midwest. Enjoy!

Snow Plowing 01/09/11
By Cliff Chamberlin
I figured that I better get going on the plowing job. Have 5" now by 1pm today and another 5" or so yet to come by tomorrow afternoon. My 450cc ATV - Roscoe - with 50" blade on it did the job without fussing. 10" (of snow) would be a big push for Roscoe. It's 300 ft down to the road. Took me 90 mins to get the job done.
It's 17 degrees now and going down to 5 or so and very little breeze at all. The snow pulls out tomorrow and it turns real cold, with a high on Mon and Tue of +5 and lows around -5. Then on Tue the wind kicks in and rearranges all the snow in a different place.
Havin to much fun!
